Why Acupuncture?

The art of acupuncture has been used for centuries and according to Traditional Chinese Medicine, good health depends on a balanced flow of energy through the body.

Pain and illness block the energy flow and by removing that blockage, it’s possible to restore the body’s natural equilibrium. This is achieved by the insertion of needles into the skin along the body’s energy channels, to allow the manipulation of the energy and restoration of its flow.

Acupuncture practitioners today combine the Traditional Chinese Medicine theory with a modern Western approach, where acupuncture needles are used to stimulate the sensory nerves that sit under the skin. This encourages the body to use its own natural resources, like endorphins and oxytocin.

By using the body’s natural chemicals, acupuncture helps relieve pain and stress, and aids the healing process. It can also help improve sleep patterns through the release of melatonin, and boost a sense of wellbeing by stimulating the release of serotonin.

How Does Acupuncture Work?

Anita Holmes, our fully qualified and highly experienced acupuncture practitioner at Mint Wellbeing, is a skilled professional and advocates the use of acupuncture as a safe, effective treatment option for a variety of ailments and pain issues.

Single use, sterile needles are inserted into the skin at certain points of the human body to stimulate the release of the body’s natural chemicals to restore balance and harmony. There are 361 acupuncture points which are the meridians along which the body’s energy flows.

By inserting needles along the meridians at these points, which are called receptive fields, it stimulates the multiple sensory neurons which increases blood flow, balances the body’s energy, as well as boosting pain relief.

When you attend Mint Wellbeing for acupuncture, our experienced practitioner, Anita, will discuss the issues you are experiencing and explain the treatment process.

The treatment may target the area where you are feeling discomfort or pain, or at more distal points, depending on the condition being treated. She will insert the needles into your skin accordingly and may gently turn the needles during the treatment to stimulate the area being treated to promote their effectiveness.

In most cases, a course of 4 to 6 sessions are recommended to benefit from the full effect of acupuncture treatment although, generally, patients start to see positive results after a few treatments. We would also advise that patients have something to eat 1 to 2 hours before treatment.

Anita Holmes and Ella Wharton are both acupuncture trained Physiotherapists, each with membership the AACP (Acupuncture Association of Chartered Physiotherapists).
