Who Can Benefit From Sports Massage?
Sports massage isn’t just for athletes, it’s for anyone looking to relieve muscle tension, improve recovery, or enhance physical performance. If you are training for an event, dealing with the demands of an active job, or simply experiencing tightness from daily life, sports massage can help.
Sports Massage at Mint Wellbeing can benefit a host of different people:
- Runners
- Cyclists
- Weightlifters
- Triathletes
- Team Sports
- Individuals recovering from injury
- Individuals with chronic pain
- Desk-workers
Team sport athletes often use sports massage to aid recovery, prevent injury and to perform at their optimum. However, it’s equally effective for office workers, manual labourers, and anyone seeking to improve mobility and reduce discomfort.
At Mint Wellbeing, our expert massage therapists tailor each session to your specific needs, whether that’s easing sore muscles, improving flexibility, or supporting injury prevention. Regular sessions can help keep you feeling your best, whatever your activity level.
Additionally, individuals recovering from injuries can use sports massage as part of their rehabilitation process to reduce scar tissue and enhance healing. Those experiencing chronic pain conditions, like fibromyalgia or arthritis, may find relief through improved blood flow and muscle relaxation.
What to Expect From Your Sports Massage Session
The first sports massage session typically begins with a consultation, where the therapist discusses your medical history, physical activity level, and specific concerns. This helps tailor the treatment to your needs; recovery, injury prevention, general muscle relief or some much needed YOU time!
After the consultation you will lie on the bed and we’ll use towels to keep the sections we are not massaging warm and covered. The massage therapist will use techniques like deep tissue massage, stretching, and trigger point release to target muscle tension and improve circulation. We will always check with you about the level of massage pressure you would like. Some discomfort may occur, especially if working on tight or sore areas, but it should always be within a manageable range.
Afterwards, you may feel immediate relief, though some mild soreness is normal. Your therapist will offer post-massage advice, such as stretching or hydration tips to enhance recovery. If you are planning on exercising after the session, this does not put you at risk of injury. We would however recommend sports massage post exercise for optimum results.

What our patients say..
Posted on Rebecca DudillTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Mint physiotherapy in Wimbledon is a professional, evidence based practice. I have had great care there and felt very looked after. My injury is much improved and I am back to my usual activities. The studio is bright light and modern and scrupulously clean. I felt very confident in the way my injury was managedPosted on Jay BarclayTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I saw Amy for physio after shoulder surgery, and she was amazing! Amy tailored each session and genuinely cared throughout my recovery. The clinic itself was excellent. It was really comfortable, well-equipped, and welcoming.Posted on Ceri MorganTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I would highly recommend Mint Wellbeing - Jack and Ella in particular. I have been treated for a high grade proximal hamstring tendinopathy and small tear. Jack - Your initial diagnosis was spot on. You then managed the difficult balance of getting me to seek treatment and recover, while enabling me to train for the sport I am passionate about (HYROX). Your prescribed rehab exercises plus step by step testing meant that I could maintain strength and fitness, and return to BAU training safely. The fact that I even made some gains during this period is amazing. Ella - Your acupuncture/ massage sessions helped me to manage some significant pain during this period, thank you. You are also so agile your thinking around additional rehab/ strengthening exercises to add in, to make micro adjustments to areas of concern. Thank you also for making these sessions so fun and enjoyable (not something I ever thought I would say about acupuncture!).Posted on Clare ThomsonTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I have been under Amy at Mint wellbeing for over 3 years. She has been incredible in so many ways: 1 recognised I needed to see specialist when so many other physios hadn’t 2 supported me throughout various surgeries not only with the hands on physiotherapy but the emotional stress the injury also caused 3 continued to support with advice after the main recovery period ended I travel to Wimbledon to see the team, bypassing many other London physiotherapists on the way, but the journey is so worth it! Thanks Amy and team for your endless support and patience.Posted on Nicola SpringerTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I can’t recommend Mint Wellbeing in Wimbledon highly enough! It’s a wonderfully welcoming place, and is a one-stop-shop for post-partum recovery, including physio, sports massage, and Candice’s mum-and -baby strength classes were brilliant. In particular, women’s health physio Jenny Fielding was fantastic. So knowledgable and up to date with the latest research, very professional and thorough. She put me at ease, really listened to my issues and personal goals, and tailored treatment specifically to my level. I’d definitely recommend to post-partum mum’s (or anyone with women’s health issues!).Posted on Hannah CartwrightTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Jack was absolutely brilliant. As a competitive athlete off the back of a shaky race he immediately put me at ease. His analysis of the problem was brilliantly delivered and very quickly reassured me of the treatment plan. As a fellow physio I couldn’t recommend Jack and the team at Mint Wellbeing more highly- 10 Stars!Posted on Alice TaylorTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. This place is excellent! I’ve been doing post natal rehab and return to strength here for last 4 months and it’s just a fantastic place. Candice who trains the mum and baby restore classes is excellent!Posted on sarah holmesTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I’ve been seeing Jack Collis and I’ve made a huge headway. The treatment plus exercises ( my homework) had meant I hardly need to see him anymore. Overdid it at work this week so I came back for a maintenance visit. I’ve been recommending Jack to all my friends.Posted on Paul Saint-PasteurTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Excellent physio. Over the past 3 months Gus has helped me recover from a pretty bad ankle injury. He was very good at explaining every step we were taking during my recovery. The exercise programme that he gave me was well structured allowing me to regain all my mobility. The physio facilities are also very good. I strongly recommend Gus and the entire mint wellbeing team.Posted on mike pettittTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I used Mint Wellbeing in connection with my lower back pain. I saw Gus over the course of about 4 months earlier this year and with his help and guidance, I was able to make huge improvements. Gus was very knowledgable and easy to work with and he prepared an exercise programme that developed over time as my strength and mobility improved. I was very happy with the results and I will be returning to Mint Wellbeing the next time my body needs a bit of help to repair.
Sports Massage FAQs
Can I exercise after a sports massage?
Yes, gentle movement after a massage is fine as it can help circulation and recovery. However, avoid high-intensity workouts for 24 hours to let your muscles settle and adapt to the treatment. Light stretching or walking is ideal.
Can you have a sports massage when pregnant?
Yes, but only with a therapist trained in prenatal massage. At Mint Wellbeing, our team adapts techniques to ensure your comfort and safety. Massage during pregnancy can ease back and leg tension, improve circulation, and reduce swelling, but deep tissue work or certain pressure points are avoided.
Does a sports massage hurt?
Sports massage may feel intense in tight or tender areas, but it shouldn’t be painful. Your therapist will check your comfort throughout and adjust the pressure as needed. Mild soreness afterwards is normal and usually eases within 24 hours.
Does sports massage improve performance?
Not directly, but it can support it. Regular sports massage helps your body recover more effectively, reduce muscle tightness, and maintain flexibility, allowing you to move more efficiently. By improving circulation and reducing fatigue, it can help you feel and perform at your best during training and competition.
How does sports massage reduce pain and stress?
Sports massage can help reduce muscle tension and discomfort by increasing blood flow and oxygen delivery to the tissues, which supports recovery and flexibility. It also stimulates the parasympathetic nervous system, the body’s natural “rest and digest” response, helping to lower stress hormones, reduce heart rate, and promote relaxation.
How often should I get a sports massage?
This depends on your activity level and goals. Most clients benefit from a massage every 3-4 weeks for maintenance, while athletes or those training intensely may need sessions weekly or fortnightly.
