Mastitis & Blocked Duct Treatment
Mastitis & Blocked Duct Treatment
Our rapid-access mastitis and blocked duct service is delivered by specialist pelvic health physiotherapists with experience supporting breastfeeding women with breast pain and inflammation. The service provides safe, research-informed treatment without medication, to help ease pain, improve milk flow and make breastfeeding more comfortable.
Blocked ducts and mastitis are very common throughout the breastfeeding journey and can affect up to one in three breastfeeding women. Symptoms can come on quickly, and without prompt help can lead to pain, infection, difficulty feeding and sometimes stopping breastfeeding earlier than planned.
What does the appointment cover?
We use a combination of techniques tailored to your presentation, including:
- Therapeutic ultrasound to reduce inflammation and soften congestion
- Manual breast tissue techniques to improve drainage and relieve obstruction
- Lymphatic approaches for swelling and discomfort
- Feeding/pumping guidance to reduce mechanical overload without compromising supply
- Cold/heat and self-management strategies to support recovery
- Safety planning and red-flag screening for infection
Your appointment includes a comprehensive assessment to determine the most appropriate combination of treatments. If ultrasound is indicated, it will be provided within your session. You will also receive tailored education to help prevent recurrence and manage symptoms confidently at home.
Most women experience meaningful improvement within 1–3 sessions, depending on severity and how early treatment is accessed.
Please note: Rapid-access assessment is recommended due to the acute nature of mastitis. If you are unsure whether your symptoms indicate infection, our clinicians will advise and refer as needed. We have strong links with a wider team of Lactation Consultants, GP’s and other Healthcare professionals to ensure appropriate onward referral as needed.
